5 Ways to Speed up Your Computer

Over time, the speed of your computer can decrease. You will find that your PC or Mac takes more time to respond to your actions such as opening files or folders, surfing the internet and so on. There are a lot of things you can do to speed up your computer.

Meanwhile, do follow the instructions given here to speed up your computer’s performance. The 5 steps given here are simple and should be followed in order. Do the simplest things first and the hardest things later. Let’s get started!

  1. Speed Up the Startup

There are probably dozens of programs running on your computer, which are turned on during the startup, and are slowing it down. Download a tool called Autoruns to disable programs that you don’t need during the startup. You may use Windows’ own built-in tool MSConfig for this purpose. Go to the “Startup” tab and uncheck the boxes of all programs that are not important to you, or not essential to be run when the computer is turned on. Now restart the computer and find out how it runs.

  1. Speed Up Internet Surfing

On most computers, surfing gets slower after a while. So how do you speed up internet surfing? First, get rid of your Internet Explorer and use only Google Chrome. Chrome is by far the best browser in the market right now. On Chrome, choose the option “Clear Browsing Data” and get rid of temporary internet files such as cookies, cache, download history, browsing history, etc. Install a software application called CCleaner and use it to clear all the temporary files from your browsers, Windows and the registry. Watch your PC fly!

  1. Get Rid of Applications that You Don’t Need or Use Too Much Memory

Uninstall all programs and applications you don’t use anymore. In fact, you may even consider getting rid of applications that use up a lot of your memory, such as Windows Media Player and Microsoft Office and replacing them with alternatives such as VLC Media Player and Open Office or Google Docs that use up a lot less space. You may install FoxIt Reader as an alternative to Adobe Reader. These are just some of the options to look at.

  1. Automate Your Software Updates

One of the best ways to speed up your computer and to save a lot of time is to automate your software updates. To do this, go to: My Computer -> Properties -> Automatic Updates. Set it to Download and Install Automatically. Download Update Checker from FileHippo.com to find out if any programs need to be updated manually. Update Checker scans your computer and reports back with the updates that need to be made almost instantly.

  1. Defragment Your Hard Drive

This is the last step and should be tried after you’ve tried everything else. Defragmenting the hard drive would place all information for each file on the computer in one place. This would speed up the computer considerably. Before you defragment the hard drive, you should back up your work on a different computer, hard drive, or disk.
